Carbon: A Fusion of Industrial Design and Comfort

Unveiling the Award-Winning Carbon Barstool by HOMEL DESIGN FURNITURE

Inspired by the aerodynamics of 1950s formula race cars, the Carbon barstool is a unique blend of industrial design and comfort. This article explores the design process, unique features, and the accolades of this innovative furniture piece.

The Carbon barstool, designed by HOMEL DESIGN FURNITURE, draws its inspiration from the grills of 1950s formula race cars. These grills, used to cool down the cars, have been reimagined into a seat with aerodynamic lines and smooth curves made of steel rods. The footrest, like the side vents of the race cars, features laser-cut denting for added grip. The legs, made of solid oak wood, pay homage to the primary construction material of the automobile industry.

What sets the Carbon barstool apart is its fusion of natural oak with metal rods, giving it an industrial, sturdy, and robust feel while maintaining a light and airy aesthetic. The metal frame and steel rods are individually curved to embrace the human form, prioritising comfort. The footrest features laser-cut denting for added grip, further enhancing the user's comfort.

The barstool is crafted using solid natural oak legs and individually bent steel rods. The footrest and seat support are laser cut, and the metal components are painted using a UV stable powder coating finish, available in various colours to suit the client's needs. The technical specifications of the design are W: 440 mm x D: 460 mm x H: 970 mm.

The design process for the Carbon barstool began in March 2018 and was first presented at 100% Design in London in September 2018. The design evolved through various phases, drawing inspiration from the 1950s Formula race cars. The challenge was to create an industrial barstool that appeared light and airy while being comfortable. The metal rods were curved to adjust to and envelop natural forms, and the thin yet sturdy seat support was designed to hold body weight.

The Carbon barstool is not just a piece of furniture; it's a testament to the fusion of industrial design and comfort. The design was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2019, a prestigious accolade given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The award recognises designs that showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

In conclusion, the Carbon barstool by HOMEL DESIGN FURNITURE is a unique blend of industrial design and comfort. Its award-winning design, inspired by 1950s formula race cars, showcases the innovative use of materials and ergonomic design principles. The Carbon barstool is a testament to the power of design to transform everyday objects into works of art.
